Hello Cousins,

I just received the following email from Alastair Greenshield of DNA Heritage. Basically for the next 8 weeks - last order date is 7th March 2006 (and returned no later than 3 weeks after), you can order the 43 marker test from our surname project for $137.77. This test is normally $189.

If you have the Greathouse surname and would like to take advantage of this offer and help our Greathouse Surname DNA Project reach its goal of attaining at least 2 participants for each of the 14 Greathouse families that we are working on, please consider joining our DNA project by filling out the form and submitting it, at the bottom of this page...

Thank You,
Rick

Hello,

So we're 12 days into January. Among the New Years Resolutions we are all likely to break, here's one you can keep. Finally sort out your family tree and tie up those loose ends with a little help from us.

To tie in with our Family Tree Magazine reader offer, we have lowered the cost of our 43 marker test to just $159.20 and just $137.77 if you are part of a Surname Project.  These are normally $199 and $189 respectively.

This offer is valid for all tests if ordered within the next 8 weeks - last order date is 7th March 2006 (and returned no later than 3 weeks after)

And if you think you may have friends or cousins who may benefit from this discount offer, do feel free to forward this email on to them.

At DNA Heritage we've helped families connect around the world, confirm relationships and united people who share a common ancestor, even when the last names weren't identical.

We already provide the most cost-effective test -- and this discount gives you an extra incentive and window of opportunity to verify all of your hard research and link up those spelling variants of your family name.

Along with the family name, a father also passes his Y-chromosome on to his sons. This is the same for the grandfather, great-grandfather and so on. By knowing this, we can match up people with the same last names by using DNA.

Accuracy and quality counts -- all of our genealogical tests are performed in the only ISO17025 accredited lab in the field; and with an average turnaround of results in just 15 days we can get you off to a flying start.

Kind Regards,
Alastair

Hello Susan,

We are currently working on correcting this error.

We believe this error occurred during transcription of the marriage records of Harrison County VA for a book which was published in 1979.

We will have more info on this correction soon.

We would appreciate hearing of any births or deaths in your family.

Registration and visiting will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a potluck dinner at noon. (Out of town guests are not expected to furnish food.) During the business meeting after the meal we will be making plans for the 50th Anniversary of our first reunion held on July 14, 1957, at the Portales City Park. Greathouse Cousins,

We would like to share with you the the following updated information on our official Greathouse Point DNA Project.

DNA Heritage
---------------------
8 participants
7 kits ordered
4 kits returned
1 result imported from Family Tree DNA
3 results published in DNA Heritage's Oracle database

Note: Imported result was for a participant who had individually tested with Family Tree DNA prior to the existance of any GREATHOUSE Surname DNA Project.

Notes on Results
----------------------
We currently have 3 participants whose YDNA test results are a close match. Two participants match 100%. The third participant's markers match on every marker but 3 with those 3 markers off by 1.

Thanks,
Rick

10 THINGS MY DESCENDANTS WILL HAVE WANTED ME TO KNOW

10. That future generations would count so heavily on census reporting to be factual

9. That handwritten diaries handed down to stable generation descendants are a godsend to historians, even as "mundane" things as their daily life activities

8.That when pictures were taken, making sure that they were labled on the back. more than "Sue's baby dau."

7. That there was the importance of saving letters that contained info about the family they received from others

6. Giving family history including those letters and diaries and pictures to the real caretakers of the family who cared about the family history and family history preservation

5. The importance of continuing the yearly family reunions, even if only a few attended

4. The godsend of writing down the migrations of the history that I knew it to be. From where to where, who and why......

3. The importance of writing down copies of the Family Bible records and notations and passing it along to many members of the family including connecting ones in whatever way, in case of fire, flood, or stupid direct descendants who would pitch the valuable info...

2. The godsend of writing down their own family history and diagrams the way they knew it to be including who fought in what war, and whether or not the family was cousins with whatever famous person ( and perhaps how, if they were!). And while we're at it, making the notations of how the name was spelled!

1. To NEVER NEVER NEVER name a son or daughter the same as in the past if more than 2 times it already appears in the same generation, found in the same county, and state.

Greathouse Cousins,

The ball is really rolling on our DNA project.  In an effort to keep everyone updated with the current status of our official Greathouse Point and Greathouse Cousin Network (GP/GCN) DNA project, I'd like to share the following updated information with you.

As you know, DNA Heritage, www.dnaheritage.com , has been chosen to administer the testing of DNA samples for our official GP/GCN DNA Project.

For more information or if you would like to join our DNA project, please see http://www.greathousedna.us .

In order to participate in our Greathouse Surname DNA Project, you need to be a male with the GREATHOUSE surname. Your Y-Chromosome, that of your father, your brothers, your father's brothers and sons (males with the GREATHOUSE surname) will be identical (except for rare mutations). If you are a female GREATHOUSE descendant, encourage your father or brother to take the test if your maiden name is Greathouse, otherwise your male Greathouse cousins, uncles, etc. will work. Ideally there should be two participants from each branch of your family to allow for unrecorded adoptions, etc. and to verify and confirm each other's test results.

GREATHOUSE DNA Project Update follows:

DNA Heritage
5 kits ordered
1 kit returned
1 result imported from Family Tree DNA
1 result published in DNA Heritage's Oracle database

Note: Imported result was for a participant who had individually tested with Family Tree DNA prior to the existance of any GREATHOUSE Surname DNA Project.

Please notify us when you join the project, and include your Greathouse lineage in the following sample format.

My lineage, for example, is:

John Greathouse Sr. m. Sarah "Sallie" McDade
..Edward "Ned" Greathouse m. Matilda Blosser
....Isaac Benjamin Greathouse m. Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Tanner-Greathouse-Tucker
......Ervin M. Greathouse m. Effie Leveary Webb
........Paul "Dick" Greathouse m. Zadia Dale Price
..........Paul Richard Greathouse m. Sharon Kay Boggs
............Richard Ivan Greathouse -> me

Please join with me, in wishing Ted McMullen a VERY Happy Birthday!

May 26, 2005

Today, We Honor... Theodore Paul McMullen on his 82nd Birthday!

Ecclesiates 7:1 says "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth."

As genealogists, we recognize those truths perhaps more than anyone! We try to preserve the lives that have been lived - the lives that have made us what we are today!

And TODAY we CELEBRATE Ted's good name! - the blessing he has brought and will continue to bring to the Greathouse family - The blessing his life of sacrifice has been to our country - Serving 27 years in the military and even suffering 8 months as a prisoner of war - His faithfulness to serve and endure through great trial is an inspiration to us all.

The book Ted's been writing since his birth (his LIFE) makes this day - his 82nd birthday FAR GREATER than the day of his birth. He has used these 82 years WISELY.

As Ted motivates us all with the thought that every new day God blesses him with is a special gift, we pray the Lord gives him many more "CHAPTERS" to write in the family legacy! God bless you, Ted. WE SALUTE YOU!

Please join us in wishing Ted a Happy 82nd Birthday, by signing our birthday card to Ted. Please sign our card by replying to the message.

Ted's lineage follows...

John Greathouse Sr. and Sarah "Sallie" McDade
..Sarah Greathouse and Matthew McMullen
....Edward McMullen and Mary Alice Hunt
......Benjamin Harris McMullen and Bessie Mae Thompson
........Theodore Paul McMullen and Hildegard Poschinger

God Bless,
Rick

Greathouse Cousins,

I  have good news for those wanting to participate in our Greathouse Surname DNA project. As you may know, members of the Greathouse Cousin Network (GCN) have asked the board of directors to set up and administer an official DNA project, as a project of Greathouse Point and the GCN.

I am excited to report that our project is now accepting participants. We have selected DNA Heritage (DNAH), http://www.dnaheritage.com , as our official provider for the testing and analysis of our participants DNA samples.

You can read more about our choice of provider and join our Greathouse DNA Project at http://www.greathousedna.us .

We hope to maximize our information by using our extensive data base in conjunction with the DNA project.

We know Greathouse Point and the GCN has a lot of credibility in the genealogy community and we are working to protect the privacy and trust placed in Greathouse Point and our board of directors. Your information will not be used for anything except this specific project without your explicit permission.

The whole project will be administered by the GCN's board of directors, with our new director, Sandy Taylor, serving as the Surname Project Administrator for our Greathouse DNA Project at DNAH. This will ensure that the highest level of integrity is maintained at all times.

If you would like more information or want to discuss how you might benefit from or aid our DNA project, please email me at rick@greathouse.us
