Though I only knew Pat as a correspondent, and leader of the Greathouse Cousins, I came to realize how wonderful and caring she was. Her accomplishments will be remembered by all. My deepest sympathy to Robert and her sons, Allen and Mark and their families. Verna's and My prayers are with you. We will all miss our good friend Pat.

I will miss Pat greatly. This relative I never met in person brought us all together. We are all in her debt. She was funny, and tireless, and generous, and welcoming. I so enjoyed her posts from time to time about the foibles of genealogy.

Robert, please know that you are in my prayers.

Greathouse Cousins...

What do we say to one so special and so dear to each one of us who is nearing her journey home? She has touched each of our lives in a special way and we would like to let her know... just how much she means to us but the words we find... fall so very short.

It hurts to let you go, but we love you too much to selfishly keep you for a life of misery and pain. And why would we keep you from the arms of your loving heavenly father.........and from meeting the one who loved you enough to give His very life for you?

No, instead, with tears in our eyes, but the eternal HOPE we hold dear in our hearts, we let you go. And as we release you, we send you with our prayers.......that you would have comfort to the end of your journey and all fears will vanish as the very one who paid the price of your salvation WALKS WITH YOU through the valley of the shadow of death all the way to the other side where the glorious light of heaven and of our Savior shines with a brightness we can only imagine.........until, shortly, we join you there. -- Anne Minnick

Patricia Dodd Greathouse passed away this morning at Columbus Hospice House, Columbus, GA. Her funeral will held Sunday, February 9th, 2003 at 3:00pm. Visitation is tomorrow night 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Please keep Robert and the rest of her family in your prayers.

Warmest Regards,
Rick Greathouse - West Virginia

THE DAY GOD CALLED YOU HOME

God looked around his garden,
And found an empty space.
He then looked down upon this earth
And saw your sweet tired face.
He put his arms around you,
And lifted you to rest,
God's garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.
He knew you were suffering,
And he knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never,
Get well upon this earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb.
So He closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered peace be thine.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

Source: John D. Greathouse:

Ridgley, the son of William and Jane Lewis Greathouse along with his two
brothers, George and Henry went to California as young men. They were
involved in gold mining, banking, stage lines, and other businesses.

Ridgley was a wealthy banker in northern California, until the Civil War
started. He is the one who got his fame along with Ashbury Harpending for
what became known as the "Chapman Affair". After he was captured, released,
recaptured , imprisoned at Fort Lafayette, located on an island at New York,
he escaped and swam two miles to shore. He went to Canada and then on to
Europe. Later he returned and joined his brother Henry in mining in Idaho.
Henry and Ridgley ended up in Texas. Henry as a banker, but Ridgley never
again acquired his wealth that he had when he was mining at Yreka, CA. He
died a pauper on the Matador Ranch, Texas and supposedly is buried in an
unmarked grave.

He was one of the three "fabulous Greathouse brothers" who ran successful
shipping, banking, and transportation and real estate businesses out of
Yreka. What Ridgely Greathouse did with his wealth got him into a whole lot
of trouble. He was from Kentucky and more than a sympathizer for the South
in the Civil War. He joined two other Confederates and bought the J. M.
Chapman, a ship they planned to outfit as a pirate frigate so that they
could capture the gold and silver-laden ships as the sailed out of San
Francisco Bay. They had papers from the President of the Confederacy
authorizing these activities for the South. The Chapman was about ready to
sail to an island off San Francisco where the cannons and other armaments
concealed in the hold under agricultural produce would be mounted in place.
However, their ship was forced to wait until the last minute to go out with
the tide because one of the conspirators was delayed in obtaining the papers
from the Confederacy. This delay gave the Navy reason to become suspicious
and to search the ship and incarcerate the perpetrators in Alcatraz. After
the war ended they were pardoned, but Ridgely Greathouse was later captured,
charged with treason and imprisoned at Fort Lafayette, near New York. He
escaped to Canada after killing a guard. His diary of this whole affair was
published as it was received by the Sacramento Union, stimulating many
letters to the editor. One report placed him in Idaho for a while while
another placed him in Texas where he lived to a ripe old age.

Hi Pat,

I have been researching the Greathouse name for quite some time now and finally found what I believe to be my Texas/Kentucky connection. I am researching the family of William and Jane Lewis Greathouse. One of their sons (Henry) is in my line. Is this the same family that you are
researching? If so, can you give me any information on the children of Henry and Margaret Leheigh Greathouse. He was also married to a Jennie McCall.

I am now trying to piece together what info I do have about Henry and his
son William from the Texas area.

You can e-mail me at PEGREATHOUSE@JUNO.COM

News and Updates / A New and Improved... Greathouse Research Guild
« on: April 29, 2004, 05:00:45 PM »
Greathouse Cousins,

We would like to announce the reopening of the Greathouse Research Guild, our new and improved online forum for Greathouse Point www.greathouse.us and the Greathouse Cousin Network.

Hosting and setup of our new forum has been graciously provided by Todd Thrash from Kickstart I.T., www.kickstart-it.net/frameindex.html of Bellaire, TX. Todd is Lynn Leonard's son-in-law. We want to thank Todd for his help and efforts.

Our new forum is now open and ready for your enjoyment. http://forum.greathouse.us

We hope that you will find this forum to be an effective tool to help you connect with other researchers of the Greathouse family and share your research with others. Our new forum works pretty much the same as our old forum, the forum hosted by EZBoard, but we have added some exciting features!

1. You can now sort each forum to your own likeing, either newest post first or oldest post first. When you browse a forum, you will notice the sort option at the bottom of the forum window.

2. In our new forum, you also have the option to be notified by email when someone posts a reply to a discussion you started or one that you have posted to. This option can be set in your profile during registration. Just select "Yes" in the option for "Always notify me of replies". If you don't want to set this option so it is always on in your profile, you can set it whenever you post a new message. The notification of replies feature only works if you register with a valid email address though.

3. We have added new forums in an effort to provide a place where researchers can meet and share information about the Greathouse family line that they are working on. In other words, if you are a descendant of Herman Groethausen, you now have a forum where all researchers of Herman Groethausen can better focus their research on this family. So we now have a forum where researchers of each of the 13 Greathouse families, as listed on Greathouse Point's Families page, www.greathouse.us/families.htm , can focus on their primary family of interest.

4. We have also added a "How To" section for tips and questions on research, genealogy software programs and more.

Again, you may visit our new forum at: http://forum.greathouse.us . Please stop by for a visit.

We do hope that you will register with our forum so that others can email you with questions, if they have any. There is an easy to use registration form. The only fields that are required are the following:

User name
Password
Confirm Password
Email address

If you have any problems registering, please email me. I would be happy to help you register.

After you register, please browse to your family line, share your lineage and post any questions that you may be seeking answers for, regarding your Greathouse research.

Thanks,
Rick
