Greathouse Point's Table at the Fair

I have made arrangements to have a table at the fair for Greathouse Point, which I will be sharing with Greathouse "Cousin",  Linda Birgel. She will be showing photos from her recent trip to Germany, where she was able to meet our "Cousin" from the Netherlands, Jan Grothauzen. From the sound of her trip, Jan was very helpful to her while Linda and her husband were touring in Germany. Linda will also have other items of interest to share with all who visit our table.

Also at our table for Greathouse Point, I will be conducting searches through our Greathouse family databases for all who stop by our table with questions about their Greathouse Family.

There is also a considerable number of Greathouse's who live in the area of Spencer as well as those that come from other states who usually try to attend the fair, so there was quite a few of us who got to meet each other at the fair in September 2004.

For reasons that many of you know, I was unable to attend the fair in September 2005. Mom is doing great with her chemo therapy treatments and we are hoping to hear more good news next  Friday when she has her next MRI.

Well we have high hopes that we will have a very successful fair this year, and I do hope to see you at the fair next Saturday on 23 September 2006. If you can attend the fair, please be sure to stop by Greathouse Point's table and sign our guest book.

Thanks,
Rick

Happy Birthday... Greathouse Point!
4 June 2006

On Sunday, 4 June 2006, we will be celebrating the 8th Birthday of Greathouse Point.

Greathouse Point has become what it is today because of the cooperation, teamwork and the mutual goals shared by all the members of our Greathouse Cousin Network.

Greathouse Point is and will continue to be a place for the entire Greathouse family to share the research we have gathered through the contributions made by the members of the Greathouse Cousin Network.

Greathouse Point can only be as great as YOU, our contributors, make it. We hope each Greathouse "Cousin" will find new information here and will in turn contribute to our efforts.

We would like to thank you, our "Cousins", for all of the help you have given us over the last 8 years. We look forward to working with you, in the future, to accomplish even more successes in our research of the Greathouse family.

I would like to submit a Greathouse obituary.  I'm sure you will have a need to shorten it.  I did not realize it was so long when I started typing it.  I also found this Greathouse in the 1930 Census of Rio Arriba Co., Tapiecitas, NM.  I believe his mother was a Native American.

I have no idea where this Greathouse fits in; but I hope someone does.

-----------------------

The following appeared in the Las Cruces Sun News dated 3 Dec. 2004, Las Cruces, NM.

GREATHOUSE

Herbert F. Greathouse, a fifty-year resident of Las Cruces, died 30 Nov. 2004, Born in a tent on Aug. 30, 1920 in the yard of the local doctor in Cuba, New Mexico. Herb was the son of Willie Smith Greathouse, a homesteader in Rio Arriba County, and his beloved wife, Alzina Crowfoot Greathouse.

Although education was hard to come by, Alzina valued it highly and saw her family through many hardships in order to assure that the children were educated.  Herb and his sister Alice rode a horse many miles through harsh weather in desolate countryside to get to school.  His father soon realized that they were wearing out the horse.

Their mother then moved into a little shack in Regina, NM so that they could continue to attend elementary school.  Herb graduated from high school at The Spanish American Normal School in El Rito, during which time he won the state typing contest, was valedictorian and was a Golden Gloves Boxing champion.

On the weekends, Bill Greathouse, by then a widower, would fetch his children from school to help him with the work on the farm.  Herb later graduated at the top of his class in organic chemistry at New Mexico A & M.  Herb excelled at everything he did.

WWII interrupted Herb’s education; he participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and four other European campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge.

Returning to New Mexico to finish college, he met the love of his life, Patricia O’Donnell, to whom he was married for 57 years.  They were the proud parents of four loving daughters, Patricia, Susan, Mary Beth and Betty Lou.

Herb retired after an exemplary 30-year career in the FBI during which he set a record in marksmanship that stood for many years at the training center in Quantico, Virginia.

Herb and Pat began raising registered quarter horses in 1977.  In the 25 years that they raised horses, they produced numerous AQHA champions, futurity winners and World Show qualifiers.  At the same time, he was teaching criminal justice at NMSU where he was known as an interested supportive professor whose classes were always filled.  Students knew that he was always tough but fair.

Herb also gave his time as a leader to 4-H clubs in Las Cruces, coaching the first horse, judging team from NM to win the national championship.  Herb was a respected woodsman and hunter and used his knowledge to introduce many 4-H members and NMSU students to the Gila Wilderness through horse packing trips.  Herb was a past president of Rotary, Southwest Quarter Horse Association and the NMSU Alumni Association, and held several offices in the New Mexico Quarter Horse Association through the years.

Everyone who knew Herb knew him as a lively storyteller and a man of great character and integrity.  He was always adamant about the necessity of a good education, and never failed to encourage and exhort his daughters and grandchildren in the importance of school.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Herb was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Hughes and his brother Richard Greathouse. He is survived by his wife Patricia O’Donnell Greathouse, his daughters Patricia Greathouse and her husband Christopher Barnes, Susan Barrett and her husband Christopher Barrett, Mary Beth Britton and her husband William Britton and Betty Lou Valdez and her husband Robert Valdez.  Grandchildren include Joshua and Angela Schriber and their children Isaiah and Jonas, Emily and Jasper Schriber, Marie and Andrea Britton, Sophia and Louisa Barrett, Erin and Matthew Little and Kelly Valdez.  He is also survived by his sister Martha Lasater and her husband Roger, his brother, Ted Greathouse and his wife Annette, his brother-in-law, Newt Hughes, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was very close to his wife’s family, Charles and Louise O’Donnell and their children, Michael, Sarah, Kathy, Scott and Kenny and their children.

Cremation will take place. A service to honor Herb’s memory and significant to his friends and family will be arranged around Christmas time in order to allow the college-age grandchildren to attend.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Herbert F. Greathouse scholarship in Criminal Justice c/o The NMSU Foundation, P.O. Box 3590, Las Cruces, NM 88003.

Historic graves moving
February 22, 2006

http://tinyurl.com/o234v

By Sebastian Kitchen
Montgomery Advertiser

Montgomery County Commissioners gave developers the go-ahead Monday to move historic Pinkston Cemetery along Chantilly Parkway.

The commissioners voted 3-2 to declare the cemetery abandoned, which clears the way for developers to relocate the family graveyard.

"Damn history. Full speed ahead with progress," said Ted Urquhart, president of the Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance.

Commissioners Dimitri Polizos and Reed Ingram voted against the move. Ingram has said a grave should be a person's final resting place and should not be moved.

Commissioners Todd Strange and Jiles Williams, who visited the area, said they had reservations about the idea. They said the mass of weed growth and underbrush around the site is evidence the cemetery had been neglected for years.

Family members said they had been locked out of the process.

Ann Pinkston LaBarge's grandfather, Frank Howard Pinkston, is buried in the cemetery. She agrees the cemetery should serve as his final resting place.

"It's just maddening," she said.

LaBarge said she is appalled they are moving him. The remains will be placed next to her grandmother in Montgomery Memorial Cemetery.

"It wasn't surprising, 'cause we've known all along money talks," she said.

LaBarge plans to be present when they move the grave, which is one of about 50 in the cemetery. Only two, including her grandfather's, are marked.

John Howard, attorney for developers Trum LLC, said he does not know how long the movement of the cemetery will take or when it will begin. He said they likely will start clearing brush this week.

"It has been a long process and we're glad its finally been approved," Howard said. "We feel like we had a legal right to move the cemetery and we're glad that the county commission approved it."

Howard said his clients will spend thousands to move the graves. The Office of Archaeological Research at the University of Alabama will disinter and relocate the remains. Howard said they will document the graves and their findings.

Howard said the he did not know what will be built on the site specifically, but said it will be a retail development.

The graves will be better kept in a public cemetery with a marker detailing the history, Howard said.

Urquhart said he was disappointed in the commission's decision, but does believe the developers are moving the graves in a proper manner. He is concerned about the fate of other historic cemeteries in the area, which he said contain some of the county's earliest settlers.

Stop the Destruction of Historic Burial Sites in Alabama

Sign the petition here... http://www.petitiononline.com/McDade1/petition.html

To:  Alabama Legislature

Alabama does not have strict laws protecting historic burial grounds – Native American, Revolutionary War Veterans, early pioneers – it simply does not matter. Developers who choose to plow under these sites have little or nothing to fear from the law.

Developers do not have to share the cost of moving graves. Developers are not even required to look for living defendants. There are no requirements for archeological inspections.

Preservation groups believe there are as many as 20 graves of Revolutionary War soldiers in just Montgomery County, Alabama. Six Revolutionary War soldiers' burial sites have been confirmed in Montgomery County, according to the Alabama Society for the Sons of the American Revolution. These graves and other historic sites are being threatened by development.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Greathouse Cousins,

Please join with Lynn, Sandy and myself in sending our sympathies to Mark Barrow. He lost his wife Sandra Barrow in a car accident on 29 December 2005.

Mark and Sandra were on their way to Salt Lake City, Utah when their car rolled over after hitting a patch of black ice on Interstate 84 near Wendell Idaho. Sandra was killed instantly.

I am sure many of you have corresponded with Sandy over the years. I know she has been a great help to most of us in our Greathouse family research.

We would like to share our thoughts and prayers with Mark and his family... so you may share your thoughts and prayers with Mark by replying to this forum message.

Warmest Regards,
