Queries / Laura Greathouse
« Last post by Jess Kalis on July 07, 2008, 05:25:03 PM »
I am seeking information on my biological great grandmother.  The only info. that I have is that her maiden name was Laura Greathouse and she was married to Albert Warne. They lived in Cambridge, OH.  She gave birth to my grandmother, Elsie Opal Warne on 6 Dec. 1901.  My understanding was that they had three older children, Earnest, Lizzie, and Ferry (unknown spl).  Laura died sometime prior to 3 Aug 1904, since that was the day that my grandmother was adopted by Frank and Josephine Guthrie and the adoption papers listed the mother as dead.  Any information that anyone can provide to help me track down my family lineage would be greatfully appreciated.  Thank you.  Jess Kalis, Portage, MI.

Betty Renick has shared the following info:

http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1079004&Type=Death
Death certificate for Samuel Greathouse, father of Lonnie Gay

Copy of an old contact:

Samuel Lee Greathouse (d. 1944) m. Amanda Wilson (d. 1937). Their children were Rex, Lonie and Onie Guy (twins), and Tolly. Onie Guy (8/3/1898-9/18/1971) m. Jenny Ann Sampson (3/27/1905-3/12/1980) in 1923. Their children were Samuel, Edith, Madeline, Elva, Eva, Hazel, Evelyn, and Betty.

My grandmother was Evelyn. I have hardly any information so anything would be greatly appreciated. My father grew up in Spencer which leads me to believe that is the area the family is from.

Hello Sharon,

Thanks for the email of introduction. We would be glad to work with you to help you learn more about your family. Can you share some more information about your father and any siblings that he had? As well as any information on Gay, his parents and siblings?

My family is from Spencer, Roane County, WV. Settled there about 1815 and my great-grandfather left there about 1906 and settled in Richwood, Nicholas County, WV.

I will be making a trip to Spencer tomorrow night for the Roane County Historical Society meeting. We have an Adkison who is a member of the society and has written a book on the settlers of Reedy, WV.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

Thank you for answering my note yesterday.  I will look tomorrow for any information we might have.  I know my grandfather Gay has a twin brother not sure on his name but I believe his mother name was Sarah but, I might be wrong.  But, according to records that we found at the State Library they came from Spencer, WV.  My grandfather who died when I was less then a year old came from a large family.  They all are buried between Clinton and Hector Arkansas in what I call the Greathouse Cementary beautiful in the ozarks of Arkansas.  I wished I had more information tonight but I don't.  I just have a feeling that we are related.  Because how many Greathouse's come from Spencer, WV
One thing that I do no is all the males in my father's family died very young except one who just passed this last year.
My daddy died at the age of 32 with major heart problems.  Was one of the first people in the state to have open heart surgery in 1969.  He made it through the surgery but died shortly afterwards.  I had just turned 12.

I hope this information helps maybe just a little and I'll check tomorrow for more.

Thank you very much for all your help,
Sharon

I believe my grandfather Gay had a brother Lay.  I'm thinking Sarah/Charolet whas his mothers name but, I'm not sure.  I'm going to try and get a hold of my dad's cousin tomorrow.  Her dad was the other twin to my Grandfather. She has lots of information even pictures.  I believe she has this huge family bible.  Can't wait till tomorrow to call her.

Talk to u soon, Sharon

Rebuilding Our Family Databases

About ten years ago, Frank Neher volunteered to collect Greathouse family data from anyone who believed they were a descendant of a Greathouse ancestor. Pat Greathouse volunteered to head the mailing list where ideas and theories were shared. In March 1998 along with Rick Greathouse, they founded Greathouse Point, as a website where their Greathouse family research would be shared with others. At that time, it was difficult to easily find original sources, so the family databases were compiled based on donated family histories. Some were accurate; some were not.

We regret that Frank and Pat didn't live long enough to see some of the excellent resources now available to document and prove or disprove our information.

Because our original databases were built on sources that are considered to be weak by today's genealogical standards, we have removed those databases from Greathouse Point.

All family line databases are being rebuilt, using sound and proven genealogical standards, along with better primary and secondary source documents.

When we feel confident that we have documented as much as possible, the lines will be reposted here at Greathouse Point.

We need your help and your source documents to make this effort a success. If you can contribute documentation or you would like to join the team of researchers who have undertaken this task, please contact us at Research@Greathouse.us .

We are guiding Greathouse Point into being a source of documentation, not speculation. We want anyone who encounters this site to feel confident that they have the best possible information to validate their Greathouse family lineage.

West Virginia History Hero - Carol Board
History Hero Award presented to Carol Board

History enthusiasts gathered on Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center for the awards ceremony that kicked off a successful day of celebrating West Virginia history. First Lady Gayle Manchin was assisted by Dr. Robert S. Conte, chairman, and Dr. Kenneth R. Bailey, vice chairman of the West Virginia Archives and History Commission, in presenting History Hero awards to 52 individuals from around the state for their grassroots-level contributions to the preservation, promotion and perpetuation of the states rich history. City, county and state historical, preservation and genealogical groups and museums provided nominations for the awards. A complete list of this years recipients, along with a brief explanation of their contributions, is enclosed.

Carol Board, member of the Roane County Historical Society since 1993, has served as treasurer and co-chairman of the Roane County Genealogical Fair, and chaired Roane County's Sesquicentennial Committee in 2006. During the Black Walnut Festival, this committee sponsored an essay contest for county school children, sold commemorative baskets, sponsored a float, and held a county birthday party. It also installed in the courthouse plaques of all officials elected since the county was formed. To preserve a fifty-year-old newspaper, Board cut and pasted articles into a book sold by the Roane County Historical Society.

Nominated by Roane County Historical Society, Inc.

Carol,

We Thank You for all of your hard work and we congratulate you for receiving this much deserved and prestigious award.
