Matilda Greathouse Connolly 1833 - 1913

The relationship of Matilda to John Greathouse is established from his estate. It appears that John Greathouse died without a will, so all of his natural heirs are listed in the appraisal of his estate which is on record in the Roane County Court House in Spencer, WV. John died July 4, 1866. Matilda Greathouse wife of Elias Conly is listed as an heir.

The record of Matilda's birth and death comes from her gravestone which shows 8 November 1833 as birth and death as 18 March 1918. Burial and tombstones are on private property in Roane County owned by Joseph William Nutter, a descendant now deceased, of Matilda Greathouse.

There is a record of Matilda's marriage to Elias Connolly in Wirt County, but without the exact month and day. The prior date is 9/3/1849 and next date in marriage records is 10/27/1849. It is believed the marriage was probably in September or October 1849.
Joe Nutter had a copy of the deed for the Connolly tract which Elias purchased from Ephraim Bee 18 March 1870. The Connollys were early settlers in the Washington District of Calhoun County. The district is bounded on the north by Lee District, east by Gilmer and Braxton Counties, south by Clay, and southwest and west by Roane County. The land purchased by Elias in 1870 was right on the border of Roane and Calhoun and on Henry's Fork.
It is not certain where Elias and Matilda lived prior to 1870, but it was probably around Richardson, where many Connollys lived. Richardson was just  over the Roane County line into Calhoun County and was located up the West Fork near the mouth of Henry's Fork.

In 1870 Census Aug 9, 1870 Spencer District:E Connolly age 42, Matilda age 37, Sarah age 17, Charlotte age 15, Daniel age 14, Elizabeth age 10, Emeline age 6, Hamilton age 4, Robert E age 2.
Francis Marion b. 5 July 1870 is not showing

Margaret Connolly, first child, was born 15 Apr 1851 in Calhoun County WV and died 19 Mar 1932 in Roane Co, WV. She married William H Nichols 02 April 1868 in Roane County, WV. In transcribed records her parents are listed as Elias & Lilly. Since Matilda went by "Tilly" I believe this is a misreading of the records. Her birthplace is showing as Gilmer County, VA but living in Roane County. Source of her date of birth and death is from Don Norman's family record files and others, but has also been documented with death certificate on file WV archives. This shows her parents as Tilly and Elias Connolly. She and her family appear in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses for Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia and the birth date is  consistent with her reported ages. She is buried in the Wright Cemetery in Calhoun County, WV with her husband.

Sarah Jane Connolly was the second child born to Matilda and Elias Connolly. Her birth and death are recorded on her death certificate and on file in the WV archives. Her date of birth is showing as 1 July 1853. Informant was C(harles) E(dward) Starcher, son by her first marriage. Family history shows her birth date as 30 June, 1853. Her date of death is 29 October 1930 in Roane County, WV with burial in Hodam Cemetery in Roane County. Photo of her gravestone also shows her date of birth as July 1st. Inscription reads "A tender mother and a faithful friend". Marriage records show Sarah Starcher age 26 daughter of Lias and Matilda married 12 February 1879 to Fieldon Walker age 26, parents William & Mary Walker by Rev. George A Burdett. Sarah's second husband, Fieldon Walker, was the son of Willis and Mary Jane Boggs Walker. Mary Jane married second to James Washington "Wash"  Greathouse, believed to be the son of William H Greathouse, a nephew of Matilda Greathouse Connolly, Sarah's mother.

Charlotte Connolly is believed to be the next child of Elias and Matilda born 09 Aug 1855 and had the nickname of "Lottie". There appears to be a record of her as a member of the Little Creek/Triplett Baptist Church "At a called meeting Nov. 8th 1869 Sisters Rachael Bennett and Charlotte Connolly were received for Baptism and were baptized and received by the hand of fellowship." Another note on 30 November 1872 "6th. Res. that we Exclude Sister Lottie Connoly on the charge against her". Record of marriage Roane County, WV: James H Soubourn age 21 and Charlotte Conly age 16 born in Roane, parents Elias and Matilda 30 June 1871.

George W Connolly, son of Elias and Matilda, was born 14 June 1856 in Calhoun County, VA and died 17 July 1858 in Calhoun County, VA of Cholera Infantum. Source is death records from WV archives.

Next son is Daniel Nathan Connolly and birth and death information are from death records WV Archives which show his parents as Elias Connolly and Matilda Greathouse. He was born 29 September 1857 in Roane County VA and died 2 August 1935 in Russett, Sherman District, Calhoun County, WV. He married Tabitha Lowe in Roane County 18 August 1878 and married Ida Van Horn 25 November 1911 in Calhoun County, WV. Parents are not listed on marriage.

Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Connolly was supposedly born in Green County Missouri. Birthday is showing as 7 July 1860 and death date is showing as 30 January 1935. Joe Nutter said the family made a trip to Missouri by covered wagon and that she was born on that trip. She is listed in the  household of Elias and Matilda, daughter age 19, in 1880 census. Her obituary lists her living brothers and sisters:

Funeral services for Elizabeth Jane Lukens, 75, who died Jan. 30 at her home near Beaver Dam, were held from the Hodam chapel Feb. 1 by the Rev. L. E. Bolte. Burial was made in a nearby cemetery. She is survived by her husband, John B. Lukens; three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Thomas of Grace, Mrs. Effie Romine of Palestine route three, and Mrs. Calvin Hildreth of Parkersburg; three sons, Harry and Howard of Cainsburg, and Fred Lukens of McKeesport, Pa. She is also survived by two sisters and three brothers; Mrs. John Nutter of Triplett, Mrs. Stella Robinson of Grantsville, the Rev.
D. N. Connolly of Russett, Frank Connolly of Richardson and Bob Connolly.

She was first married to a Devies. Her marriage record in Roane County shows marriage 18 April 1885 Elizabeth J Devies, with her birth in Green County, Missouri. She is age 24 and John Lukens is 25.

Emeline Jenkins Connolly is listed as a member of the household in 1880 census as are James Hamilton, Robert Edward Lee, Francis Marion "Frank".

Mary Catherine Connolly was born 2 January 1872 and died 3 January 1879.

Malinda is in the 1880 census. She was born 24 Feb 1873 in Richardson, Calhoun County, West Virginia and died 21 May 1965 in Grantsville, Calhoun County, WV and is buried in the Little Creek Cemetery. This information from her grandson, Joe Nutter. Malinda married John Morton Nutter 10 April
1901 by the minister of Little Creek Baptist Church.

Estella Matilda Connolly was born 19 Mar 1880 in Roane County, WV and died 07 Aug 1966; buried in Noble Cemetery Calhoun County. She married John K Ferguson 27 April 1899 in Roane County, West Virginia.

In 1880 Census: Elias Conley age 54 b WV - father not living; Matilda age 46 white female b WV - parents not living; Children Elizabeth J age 19; Emeline age 17; Hamilton age 15; Robert E. L.

Matilda Greathouse Connolly is enumerated twice in the 1910 Census. She is in the Spencer District Census 30 April 1910 showing as Matilda Conly in the  household with daughter Sarah and her husband Fieldon Walker. She is listed as mother-in-law to Fieldon. She is age 76, born in VA, a widow. Matilda  Connolly is also showing on 5 May 1910 census in household of son Frank.
