1741-1755 - Derived Birth: Elizabeth Greathouse

The birth year 1741, of Elizabeth Greathouse, has been derived from her death notice, which was published in either the Genius of Liberty or Fayette Advisor, Uniontown, Fayette County, PA, Edition of 12 Mar 1819:

Death Notice of Elizabeth Greathouse

Mrs. Elizabeth [Greathouse] Hill died Friday night (12 Mar 1819) in Franklin Township, aged about 78 years [born about 1741]. She was found dead on Sunday (14 Mar 1819) covered with wounds and bruises. Her husband Jonathan Hill was committed to the county jail last week, charged with murder.

Footnotes:

1) From the newspaper article, Elizabeth [Greathouse] Hill, age about 78 in 1819, would have been born about 1741. While in the 1810 census of Tyrone, Fayette County, PA, there was one female enumerated in the household of Jonathan Hill, who was age 45 or over, so she would have been born about 1765 or before. Also in the 1800 census of Franklin, Fayette County, PA, there was one female enumerated in the household of Jonathan Hill, who was age 45 and over, so she would have been born about 1755 or before. Therefore, based upon the available evidence, Elizabeth [Greathouse] Hill appears to have been born between 1741 and 1755.

2) Elizabeth Greathouse, born between 1741 and 1755, was either born a daughter of a Greathouse father or she could have married a Greathouse man before her marriage to Jonathan Hill.

3) A Hill descendant has related that Elizabeth Greathouse appears to have moved to Bedford County, PA, with her brother William Greathouse before 1785, when she married Jonathan Hill there. Jonathan Hill appears to have moved to Bedford and Fayette County, PA, from Hunterdon County, NJ, after he buried his first wife, Elizabeth Phillips, there in 1785.

4) William Greathouse of Plainfield, Northampton County, PA, an adjoining county to Hunterdon County, NJ, moved his family, which consisted of his wife Mary [Beyer was likely her maiden name] and at least two children, John Leonard and Rohanah Greathouse to Turkeyfoot, Bedford County, PA, where he took up residence on land near his parent, William & Maria Barbara Schutz Greathouse between 1783 and 1785.
