1774, Jul 6 - Agreement: Charles Beale and John Greathouse

Articles of Agreement made and entered into this Eleventh Day of June 1774 Between Charles Beale of Dunmore County in the Colony of Virginia of the one part, and John Greathouse of the County and Colony of the other part Witnesseth that the said Charles Beale and John Greathouse have this day entered into Partnership in order to carry on the Farming Business and mills to the best advantage, that Lays in the said Great House's power and the said Greathouse is to have one half of the profit arising from the said mills and the one third of the produce of the plantation & the said Charles Beale is to find three working hands Viz, Jack, Pal [Pat?], & Beck[?], and the said Parties have agreed to find Horse of sufficients to do the Buisness[sic] on the said Plantation and the said Charles Beale is to find all the Working Eutentials[sic] Sufficient to carry on the said Buisness[sic] & if the said Greathouse should have Occation[sic] to hire hands on the said place he is to pay one third of The wages to the said Hirelins[sic], Likewise the said Greathouse is to find himself, Dureing[sic] the time of their partnership which is to Continue till the Experation[sic] of the Lease which the said Beale has on the said mills and plantation and the said Greathouse shall be Clear from all Expence & Rents of the said place only such as is above mentioned; and for the true performances of Each and Every Article of this Agreement the Parties hereby bind themselves to Each Other in the Pennal[sic] sum of Two Hundred Pounds Current money to be Recover'd by Virtue of these Presents, According to the true intent and meaning thereof, in Witness whereof we the said C. Beale & John Greathouse hath here unto set their hands and seals.

Excerpt from Hite family papers, 1768-1843:

Collection concerns the business and personal activities of members of the Hite, Bowman, and related families in Frederick and Shenandoah counties, Va. Section 3 includes accounts, 1779-1817, of Issac Bowman (1757-1826), in part, concerning costs for the capture and confinement of Frank, a runaway slave, in Hagerstown, Md. The section also includes an agreement, 1774, of Charles Beale and John Greathouse concerning a partnership as farmers and millers in Dunmore County (now Shenandoah County, Va.), including the use of slave labor. There is also a list, 1790-1839, of slaves, including birth and death dates.
