1777, Sep 4 - Oath of Allegiance: Robert Harkness

List of Soldiers who took the Oath of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia in Ohio County in 1777.

(National Genealogical Society Quarterly, April 1914 to October 1915)

Alfred Caldwell List, September 4, 1777

Robert Harkness

Note: Ohio County, Virginia at this time included the western third of what is now Washington and Green County, Pennsylvania.

Footnotes:

1) Robert Harkness/Hartness along with Jacob Greathouse, both from the area of Ice's Ford, Augusta County, VA, enlisted in Captain William Heyser's Company, which mustered at Hagerstown, Washington County, MD, then marched to Quibbletown, NJ, where the company was placed under the command of Colonel Nicholas Hausegger's German Regiment. Robert Harkness/Hartness and Jacob Greathouse were named as present on the muster roll of the company at Quibbletown, NJ, in Oct 1776. However, in the muster rolls for May and Jul 1777, Harkness/Hartness and Greathouse were noted as "Deserted Novr. 1st" [1776]. Both Harkness/Hartness and Greathouse would have given their oaths of allegiance to Maryland at the time of their enlistments, about Sep 1776.
