Footnotes: 1770 - Land Office: John Pierpont settled along Cheat River and opened the first land office in Northwestern Virginia John Pierpont, a native of New York settled four miles east of present-day Morgantown, WV, where he erected a dwelling and a blockhouse for protection against the invasion of the Indians and opened the first land office in Northwestern Virginia in 1770. Pierpont's land office was located within two miles of Ice's Ford, which would have made the area a hub of activity. 1770 - Land: John Ice settled at the Forks of Buffalo Excerpts from Arthur C. Prichard, An Appalachian Legacy: Mannington Life and Spirit Page 6 Mannington, our community has had several names. Located where two streams Pyles(Piles) Fork and Warrior Fork came together to form Buffalo Creek, the place was first known as Forks of Buffalo. Buffalo Creek received its name, obviously, as did many other streams in western Virginia, from frontiersmen seeing buffalo along its banks. John Ice settled at the Forks of Buffalo around 1770. There are varying accounts of John Ice, but each one reveals a rugged, frontiersman. He was a son of Frederick, Jr. and Mary Galloway Ice, and may have been born in 1728 in the South Branch Valley of Virginia. While he was still young, his mother, two sisters and a brother, William, were carried off by a raiding party of Indians. This event affected his character and life. 1770 - Land: Richard Morris settled on the waters of Sandy Creek in 1770 Richard Morris.
