Fayette County Chronology Fayette County was founded from Westmoreland County in 1783; Westmoreland from Bedford in 1773; and Bedford from Cumberland in 1771. Fayette gained from Westmoreland in 1784. A portion of southwestern Fayette was overlapped by Monongalia County, VA between 1783 and 1786. In 1786, after the boundary disputes between Virginia and Pennylvania were settled, Virginia formally terminated jurisdiction over counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, including Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland. Fayette gained from Monongalia County, VA. On 10 Apr 1807, middle of Monongahela River fixed as boundary of adjoining counties: including Fayette [no change].
