Monongalia County Chronology

Monongalia, Ohio and Yohogania County was created by Virginia from West Augusta District in 1776. Monongalia, Ohio and Yohogania overlapped territory claimed by Pennsylvania in Westmoreland, Washington and Fayette County. Monongalia gained from Augusta in 1779. Monongalia gained from Augusta but lost to Westmoreland (PA) when Pennsylvania regained effective jurisdiction of the Pittsburgh region from Virginia in 1780. Monongalia lost to the creation of Harrison in 1784. Virginia formally terminated jurisdiction over the counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, including Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland in 1786. Monongalia lost to Harrison in 1800. Monongalia lost to the creation of Preston in 1818. Monongalia lost to Preston in 1841. Monongalia lost to the creation of Marion in 1842. Monongalia separated from Virginia and became a county in the state of West Virginia in 1863.
